Science Communication Workshop at SciWri '24
Reflecting on Science Writers 2024: Connections, Collaboration, and Communication
I had the honor of serving as a workshop facilitator and panelist at the Science Writers 2024 Conference. It was a privilege to contribute to this vibrant community of professionals passionate about making science accessible and engaging.
Learning and Teaching with Incredible Colleagues
One of the highlights of the meeting was co-facilitating a hands-on workshop with two outstanding communicators: Christian Elliott from NASA and Cynthia Graber, co-host of the Gastropod podcast. Our session focused on podcasting for science communication, equipping participants with the tools and strategies needed to craft compelling science narratives and produce high-quality audio content. From narrative hooks to editing basics, the room buzzed with energy as attendees worked through real-world applications of these skills.
Building Connections and Sharing Knowledge
This wasn’t my first time engaging with this incredible community. Back in 2022, I participated in the Pump Up the Podcast Panel Session when the meeting was held in Memphis, TN. Returning this year as both a workshop facilitator and panelist felt like a full-circle moment. It’s a testament to how much the science communication landscape has grown—and how this community continues to prioritize innovation and collaboration.
But this conference isn’t just about teaching—it’s also a chance to learn, connect, and exchange ideas with some of the most inspiring voices in science communication.
Essential Podcasting Tools for Science Communicators
Our workshop emphasized how vital equipment is for producing professional-grade podcasts, even on a budget. Attendees explored microphone setups, soundproofing techniques, and editing basics using accessible tools. These resources are perfect for scientists, writers, and educators who want to amplify their message through audio storytelling. Stay tuned for an upcoming post in my creative community where I’ll break down my go-to equipment recommendations!
Why Science Communication Matters
This meeting reinforced the role of science communication. By empowering storytellers with skills in podcasting, writing, and audience engagement, we can make science more inclusive and actionable. Events like these remind me of the power of storytelling in connecting science with the real world, inspiring curiosity, and driving change.
